Somewhere along the line, I lost
the chance to talk about my dreams
which quickly thin in early winter.
She wants my name, she's 38
with kids and a commission.

The distant connection reduces us
to primal consonants. "It's 'v'
as in 'Valencia'" I tell her, "It's 'c'
like 'cerulean.'"
