Not for Love or Money

If my lover hadn't left me,
if I hadn't hated my job,
if it had been partly sunny
instead of partly cloudy,
I wouldn't have answered the ad
and gone to teach in China
where I rode my fat-tired bike
between street markets
and a woman selling small green onions
gave me her wrinkled smile.
