Nosotros

I've always been drawn to
the word nosotros, the dreamy
way it slips off one's tongue
like a ripe mango peel. As in
Nosotros comimos circuelas y
bebimos las estrelas todo el verano.
We ate plums and drank
the stars all summer long.

Any first-year Spanish student will
tell you that you really don't need
the first part, that the conjugation
of the verbs determines the meaning
of the sentence. He may be right, Riza,
but still it's a nice word to remember-
this palabra azul-
reminding me of our time in Seville.
