Pioneer

"Sure I'll go," my grandmother said when
her brother invited her to homestead in Montana.
She didn't mind the clapboard shack
or the treeless prairie
or the two-day wagon ride to the nearest town.
The only things she insisted on bringing
were her fifteen pairs of size three shoes
and her full-length mirror. She was a pioneer.
