Three vendors - Bixi from Montreal, B-cycle from Wisconsin, and The Bike Share Group from Seattle - participated in the Expo by displaying their bike share systems and allowing the public to try out their bikes. Mayor Greg Nickels and King County Council Chair Dow Constantine welcomed the vendors, along with Peter Morgan from Group Health, indicating support for bringing bike sharing to King County as an innovative mobility option.

Three-Position Bike Racks Are Coming Back!

In May, 2009 Metro tested a new support arm on the VeloPorter 3 bus bike racks on Routes 255 and 358. Based on the results of a survey distributed to customers and bus operators, Metro is in the process of working with Sportworks to get three-position racks delivered for coaches at all of the bases. Coaches serving the SR-520 corridor will be the first priority for this retrofit.

Major Taylor Program

King County is pleased to support the Major Taylor Program [external link], named after the first African-American professional cyclist, a racer during the early 1900s. This program, initiated by Cascade Bicycle Club, is an effort to enhance diversity in cycling and create a multicultural cycling community through education, awareness and opportunity

Major Taylor clubs are now operating at five locations: Global Connections High School in SeaTac, the YES Foundation in White Center, Bike Works in Columbia City, Magnuson Park Transitional Housing, and Garfield Community Center (mid-July, 2009).

Cascade Bicycle Club is seeking funding (private donations, grants, etc.) to expand the program to additional communities and sustain the clubs that already exist.
