  • Introduction

Every day, changes occur to King County roads, businesses and communities that affect our transportation network. That’s why Metro Transit makes revisions to its bus service three times each year. We want to make the transit system as efficient as possible, improve the speed and convenience of your bus trips, and deliver service you can rely on.

This Special Rider Alert summarizes service revisions that begin in early October. Please check your route's new orange timetable for more details.

Take your pick of travel modes: bus, train, VanPool, VanShare, Rideshare, Access vans for eligible riders, carpool, Zipcar, bike-and-ride and more. Name the place where you want to go - work, home or play - and choose your time. You’ll find that Metro has a solution for you.

At Metro, we’re working hard to give you easy access to the places you want to go, while helping you save money, control stress and protect the environment. So when we say, “We’ll Get You There,” we mean it!

  • Service Change Highlights
    • New RapidRide A Line, Federal Way/Tukwila; Route 174 discontinued

On Saturday, Oct 2, the new RapidRide A Line replaces Route 174 between the Federal Way TC and Tukwila International Blvd Link Station. The A Line will serve Bay 8 at the Federal Way TC and Bay 1 at Tukwila International Blvd Link Station. It will operate daily providing 15-minute service frequency most of the day, with 10-minute service during weekday peak periods. On Saturday, Oct 2, and Sunday, Oct 3, customers can ride for free on RapidRide.

RapidRide is a new type of Metro bus service that includes newly designed shelters, signs and buses. The distinctive red and yellow buses are low-emission hybrid-powered vehicles with low floors and three doors for faster, easier boarding.

Buses will use HOV lanes along Pacific Hwy S and International Blvd. As RapidRide buses approach 20 priority intersections, the bus will send a signal to traffic lights, telling green lights to stay green longer or red lights to switch to green faster.

RapidRide stations include these improved customer features: a “real-time” arrival sign that gives current information about approaching buses, a handy ORCA card reader, and improved lighting for better safety and security. Stop-request signals will be at all bus stops. Customers can use them at night to alert bus drivers they’re at a bus stop. All RapidRide bus stops will also have signs and features to give them the distinctive RapidRide look.

RapidRide has a new fare payment system that features ORCA card readers at 26 major stations. At RapidRide stations with an ORCA card reader, riders can tap their card before boarding buses and enter through the two back doors. Riders with a valid transfer or a non-ORCA pass also can enter through the back doors. If a bus stop doesn’t have a card reader or if you are paying with cash or tickets, you must enter through the front door.

All riders using RapidRide must have proof of payment (ORCA card or transfer) and be ready to show it to a fare enforcement officer, if requested. Passengers without a valid transfer or pass are subject to a citation and fine (RCW 35.58.580). Metro will provide increased security on buses and at the bus stops for fare enforcement. Refer to the RapidRide A Line map for more information.

Route 174 discontinued. On Saturday, Oct. 2, Route 174 will be discontinued and will be replaced by more frequent service on the new RapidRide A Line between the Federal Way TC and Tukwila International Blvd Link Station. For additional information on the RapidRide A Line, refer to “RapidRide begins” above.

For alternative service between the Federal Way TC and the Federal Way/S 320th St P&R, board Route 182 (Bay 3) or Route DART 903 (Bay 9) at the Federal Way TC, exit at the bus stop southbound on 23rd Ave S just south of S 322nd St and walk one block east to the Federal Way/S 320th St P&R.

    • New Metro Route 910 Auburn and Sound Transit Route 542 Redmond/U-District

Route 910 is a new fixed-route and Dial-A-Ride Transit (DART) service that will operate all day service between north and southwest Auburn via Auburn Station. It will operate hourly weekdays from about 7:57 am to 4:45 pm, and on Saturday from about 8:25 am to 5:13 pm. At Auburn Station, northbound trips will serve Bay 1 and southbound trips will serve Bay 4. The DART service in southwest Auburn will be bordered by the Supermall on the north, 15th St SW on the south, SuperMall Drive on the east and O St SW on the west (cross-hatched section on map).

ST Route 542 is a new peak-period route operated by Metro Transit that will provide weekday express service between the Redmond TC and the U-District. Westbound trips from Redmond to the U-District will operate every 15 minutes from about 5:30 to 9 am and from 3:30 to 7 pm. Eastbound trips from the I-5/NE 65th St P&R to Redmond will also operate every 15 minutes weekdays from about 6:30 to 10 am and from 2:30 to 6 pm.

Refer to the Route 910 and 542 maps for more information.

    • Transit Now service enhancements on routes 5, 7, 30, 60, 75

Improvements on routes 5, 7, 30 and 60 are funded through a Transit Now service partnership of Metro and the City of Seattle.

On weekdays, two Route 5 trips will be added each day to improve service frequency from downtown Seattle to Greenwood Ave N & N 105th St. New Northgate TC trips are being added and the combined service frequency will improve to every 15 minutes until about 8 pm. On weekday evenings from about 9:30 to 11:30 pm and weekend mornings, Route 7 service frequency will improve to every 15 minutes with the addition of 80 trips per week from 9:30 to 11:30 pm and on weekend mornings. Seventy-nine weekly trips will be added each week between Ballard and Northgate, and 109 trips between Northgate TC and the U-District.

This improvement is funded through a Transit Now service partnership of Metro and the City of Auburn. New Route 910 will provide fixed-route and Dial-A-Ride Transit (DART) service between north and southwest Auburn. On weekdays, it will operate hourly service from about 7:57 am to 4:45 pm, and on Saturday from about 8:25 am to 5:13 pm.

Starting in early October, Metro and Sound Transit will begin adding nearly 130 bus trips a day across the SR-520 bridge on routes 255, 265, 271 and new ST Route 542. These service enhancements, along with park-and-ride and bus stop improvements, will give drivers an alternative to paying tolls when electronic tolling begins in spring 2011. For more information, go to www.GoodToGo520.org.

    • Burien Transit Center parking lot scheduled to close Oct. 12 for about 18 months

The five-story garage will have parking for more than 500 vehicles. The Burien Transit Center will remain open for transit service during this time.

During this closure, an interim parking lot will be available about two blocks east of the Burien TC on the northeast corner of 1st Ave S & S 148th St. The interim lot will be served by routes 121, 122, 123, 131 and 132. • Discontinued Metro Service

Below is a numerical listing of routes that have trip cuts for the fall service change.

Metro is making some scheduling changes this fall to save money, preserve bus service, and operate more efficiently. In some cases, you may notice differences in the schedule for your route, along with longer wait times for transfers or irregular spacing between bus trips.

Unfortunately, due to reduced sales-tax revenue for transit, Metro also had to eliminate some trips on designated routes. These trip reductions were chosen to minimize the disruption to existing service. See Trip Planner or pick up a new orange timetable for complete route and schedule information.
