Special Rider Alert February 1999

Transit service changes begin Saturday, February 6, 1999 in King County.

This service change is one of three revisions Metro makes each year to improve service, respond to customer needs and implement King County’s Six-Year Transit Development Plan.

New Red Timetables

Be sure to pick up a new red timetable and check for schedule changes on the route you normally take. Because all schedule changes are too numerous to include here, please consult your timetable to see if your route has been affected by any time changes or other adjustments. Please help conserve paper by taking only the timetables you need or by using these other information options:

North Seattle Service Adjustments

King County's Six-Year Transit Development Plan enables Northend riders to travel to more places, more often with better connections. Added trips and service on bus routes are just some of the improvements.

More service changes include:

  • Routes 6, 359 and 360 are replaced by Route 16 and new Route 358. New Route 358 operates daily between the Aurora Village Transit Center and downtown Seattle.
  • Route 311 operates along 2nd And 4th avenues and Route 74 operates weekdays between the University District and the Seattle Center.

New Bus Service

New Route 358 Route 358 Map

  • Weekday operates from 5 a.m. - 1:30 a.m. and weekends from 6:15 a.m. - 1:15 a.m. between downtown Seattle and the Aurora Village Transit Center.
  • 10 minute service during commuter hours and 20 minute service all other times until 7 p.m.
  • Replaces portions of Routes 6, 359 Express and 360 Express.

Changed Bus Service

Route 5

  • One new weekday morning trip to Shoreline Community College added, departing 1st Ave. & Union St. at 8 a.m.

Route 6

  • Replaced by Route 16 and new Route 358.
  • For service to Stone Way N., use Route 16.
  • For night and Sunday service along Aurora Ave. N., use Route 16 or new Route 358.
  • For service to the Seattle Center from downtown Seattle, use routes 3, 4, or 16.
  • For service between Aurora Ave. N. and Wallingford, transfer to Route 44 at N. 46th St. or Route 16 at the Northgate Transit Center.
  • For service between Aurora Ave. N. and the Seattle Center, use new Route 358 Express and transfer to routes 16 or 74 at N. Lynn St.

Route 16

  • Service improved to every 20 minutes Monday - Saturday until 7 p.m.
  • Service formerly on Wallingford Ave. N. and N. 40th St. will now operate on Stone Way N. between N. 40th and 45th streets and on N. 45th St. between Stone Way N. and Meridian Ave. N.
  • New evening service to and from downtown Seattle.

Route 66

  • No longer serves Madison St., Colman Dock and Yesler Way. Use Route 16.

Route 74 Route 74 Map

  • New 30-minute weekday service between the University District and Seattle Center via N. 40th St. and Aurora Ave. N.

Route 311

  • No longer operates along 3rd Ave. in downtown Seattle. Board along 4th Ave.

Route 315

  • New weekend evening trips between Northgate Transit Center and Richmond Beach added, departing Richmond Beach on Saturday at 7:57 p.m., 8:57 p.m., and 9:57 p.m. and on Sunday at 7:29 p.m., 8:29 p.m., and 9:29 p.m. Trips depart from the Northgate Transit Center at 8:38 p.m., 9:38 p.m., and 10:38 p.m.

Route 359 Express

  • Replaced by new Route 358 Express

Route 360 Express

  • Replaced by new Route 358 Express

Service Changes for Central Seattle

New Bus Service

New Route 97 Express Route 97 Map

  • New route with weekday service between Pike St. and Wall St. via Elliott Ave. and 2nd and 3rd avenues in downtown Seattle.
  • Operates weekdays every 20 minutes from 6:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. with 10 minute service during commuter hours.
  • Serves the Port of Seattle and the World Trade Center.

Changed Bus Service

Route 7

  • New weekday morning trip to downtown Seattle added, departing Rainier Ave. S. & Henderson St. at 5:15 a.m.

Route 9

  • Service improved to every 30 minutes weekday nights from 7 - 10 p.m.
  • Routes 7 and 9 weekday schedules alternate daily until 10 p.m., providing service every 15 minutes between Capitol Hill and the University District.

Route 10

  • The last two late night trips departing 4th Ave. and Pike St. to Capitol Hill leave at 12:15 a.m. and 1:15 a.m.

Route 36

  • New weekday evening service to Rainier Beach added, departing 3rd Ave. & Union St. every 20 minutes between 7:15 - 8:15 p.m.
  • New Saturday service to Rainier Beach added, departing 3rd Ave. & Union St. every 20 minutes between 6:55 - 8:15 p.m.

Route 39 Express

  • Two new weekday evening express trips to Seward Park and Rainier Beach added, departing 2nd Ave. & Pike St. at 5:40 p.m. and 6:10 p.m.

Route 56 Express

  • New weekday afternoon trip to West Seattle added, departing 1st Ave. & Pike St. at 3:05 p.m.

Route 60

  • New weekday service to South Park and White Center via S. Cloverdale St. and S.W. Roxbury St.
  • Serves the VA Medical Center's main entrance.
  • Three new evening weekday trips between Capitol Hill and White Center added, departing 10th Ave. E. & E. Mercer St. at 7:45 p.m., 8:15 p.m., and 9:15 p.m.
  • No longer serves E. Marginal Way S., south of Boeing Plant Two.

Southend Improvements

Route 153

  • New hourly service from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. between Kent and the Renton Transit Center.

Route 166

  • New service between Highline Community College and downtown Des Moines via S. 240th St. and Marine View Dr. S.

Route 174

  • New weekday trips to downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport added, departing the Federal Way Park and Ride lot at 4:16 a.m. and Sea-Tac Airport at 4:47 a.m.

Route 189

  • Serves Wesley Gardens and Wesley Terrace Retirement Homes in Des Moines via S. 216th St.

Eastside Improvements and Changes

Route 204

  • No longer serves E. Mercer Island and Shorewood. Use new Route 203.

Route 230

  • Now uses Bay 4, instead of Bay 3 at the Kirkland Transit Center.

Route 233

  • New service to the Bear Creek Park and Ride lot and Avondale Rd. N.E. via SR-520.
  • No longer serves 150th Ave. N.E., 148th Ave. N.E., and 156th Ave. N.E., south of N.E. 40th St.
  • New weekday morning trip to Avondale, departing Bellevue Transit Center at 6:20 a.m. and two new evening trips to Bellevue Transit Center, departing Avondale at 6:22 p.m. and 6:53 p.m.

Route 255

  • Weekday service improved to every 30 minutes between 5:30 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. between downtown Seattle and the Kirkland Transit Center.
  • Saturday service improved to every 30 minutes between 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. between downtown Seattle and the Kirkland Transit Center.

Route 263

  • New service into the Redmond Park and Ride lot via N.E. 85th St. and 164th Ave. N.E.

Route 269

  • Some morning and afternoon trips adjusted by 5 - 15 minutes to provide better connections to other routes at the Issaquah and Bear Creek Park and Ride lots.

Route 291

  • Service from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. cancelled.

Holiday Service

On President's Day, Monday, February 15, and Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, most Metro buses will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule. On President's Day, the following routes will operate supplemental service, indicated by the letter "H" on the weekday portion of the timetable:

7E, 15E, 101, 150, 174, 194, 214, 242, 263, 307, 312, 340, 941, 942, 943.

All buses may not be equipped with wheelchair lift

Metro anticipated all buses would be equipped with a wheelchair lift by February 1999. However, the delivery of new buses has been delayed. Some of the trips indicated in your new red paper timetables won't be accessible until the new buses are available. Accessible trips indicated in the green timetables effective until February 5, 1999, will continue to be accessible. Metro Online has deleted the "L" indicator on those timetables affected for the February service change.
