Tukwila Sounder Station—East Marginal Way S

Routes that could be affected: 126 and 154

Table of Contents

Why Metro is proposing this change:

  • To improve peak commuter service to East Marginal Way S and the Duwamish industrial area.
  • To provide better connections between Sounder commuter rail service and employers in northwest Tukwila and south Seattle.
  • To reduce duplication between Metro bus routes and Link light rail.

Proposed changes

Route 126

  • Discontinue this route and replace its service to East Marginal Way S with Route 154. Service between Rainier Beach and Southcenter would be replaced by the revised Route 140 (see page 4) and Link light rail.

Route 154

  • Shorten this route to provide service between the Tukwila Sounder Station and Federal Center South. Riders from Auburn and Kent would have to take Sounder commuter rail and transfer at the Tukwila Sounder Station. Revise routing to operate along East Marginal Way S instead of State Highway 599. Increase service levels to provide better connections with Sounder commuter rail service.

Advantages

Route 126

  • Link light rail and Route 140 would provide frequent all-day service for riders between Rainier Beach and Southcenter by way of a transfer at the Tukwila International Boulevard Link Station.

Route 154

  • Connections between the Tukwila Sounder Station and East Marginal Way would be more frequent and provide better access to Sounder trains.
  • Revised routing between S 133rd Street and Tukwila International Boulevard would serve employment sites along East Marginal Way S.

Disadvantages

Route 126

  • Riders who currently take Route 126 between Rainier Beach and Tukwila would have to transfer at the Tukwila International Boulevard Link Station.

Route 154

  • Route 154 riders from Auburn or Kent would no longer have direct bus service to E Marginal Way and Federal Center South. They would have to take Sounder commuter rail and transfer at the Tukwila Sounder Station.
  • Route 154 would take about five minutes longer between the Tukwila Park-and-Ride and Federal Center South.
