I-5 South—Downtown Seattle—SeaTac—Federal Way

Routes that could be affected: 179, 194, Sound Transit (ST) Express 574, and ST Express 577

Table of Contents

Why Metro is proposing this change:

  • To reduce duplication of transit service to downtown Seattle.
  • To provide faster mid-day service between Federal Way and downtown Seattle.
  • To provide connections to Link light rail.
  • To provide early-morning bus service between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac International Airport when Link light rail is not operating.

Changes being considered

Route 179

  • Revise this route to serve the Federal Way Transit Center. Reduce service levels to match current ridership levels.

Route 194

  • Discontinue this route, and replace with Link light rail and additional service on Sound Transit Express routes 574 and 577.

New Link light rail

  • Replace Route 194 service between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac International Airport with Link light rail, which is scheduled to begin service to the airport in late 2009.

New Route 195

  • Create new Route 195 to provide service between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac International Airport during early morning hours when Link is not operating. Route 195 would serve the current bus stops at the southern end of the airport terminal.

Sound Transit Express Route 574

  • Improve service levels on this route between Lakewood, Tacoma, Federal Way, and Sea-Tac International Airport. ST Express Route 574 will replace Route 194 south of SeaTac International Airport.

Sound Transit Express Route 577

  • Expand this route to provide all-day, two-way service between Federal Way Transit Center and downtown Seattle seven days a week.

Advantages

Route 179

  • Route 179 would provide peak-period service at the Federal Way Transit Center to supplement Sound Transit Express Route 577.

Route 195 (new) and new Link light rail

  • Link will provide more frequent and reliable service compared to existing bus service.
  • Link light rail will have longer hours of operation than existing Route 194.
  • Route 195 will offer a faster connection to Sea-Tac Airport during early morning hours than existing "owl" service.

Routes ST Express 574, and ST Express 577

  • ST Express Route 577 service during off-peak hours between the Federal Way Transit Center and downtown Seattle would be 15-20 minutes faster than existing Route 194 service.
  • Route 194 service between Federal Way and Sea-Tac International Airport would be replaced with comparable service on ST Express Route 574.

Disadvantages

Route 179

  • Travel time for Route 179 riders would increase by three to five minutes.

Route 194 and new Link light rail

  • The walking distance between the SeaTac/Airport Link Station and the airport terminal is longer than the distance between the current bus stop and the terminal. The walk from the station to the airport terminal is about 1,000 feet.

Routes 194, ST Express 574, and ST Express 577

  • Riders who board Route 194 during off-peak hours at the Kent/Des Moines or Star Lake park-and-ride would have to ride ST Express Route 574 and transfer to Link light rail at the SeaTac/Airport Link Station.
  • Direct service between Federal Way and downtown Seattle would be less frequent on weekdays during off-peak hours and on weekends.
