Seward Park – Columbia City – Beacon Hill – SODO – Alaska Junction

Affected Routes: 34 Express, 35, 39, new Route 50

Table of Contents

Purpose

  • Provide service connecting Columbia City and Seward Park to Link light rail stations.
  • Provide more efficient peak-period service to Harbor Island.
  • Provide an east-west connection between Rainier Valley and West Seattle.
  • Reduce duplication of service to downtown.

Proposed changes

Route 34 Express

  • Provide three peak-period trips in the morning and three in the afternoon instead of the current four trips each.
  • Coordinate schedule with Route 7 Express so that the buses are evenly spread out.

Routes 35, 39 and new Route 50

  • Discontinue routes 35 and 39. Replace portions of routes 35, 39 and 106 with new Route 50.
  • Route 50 would operate between Othello Link station and West Seattle by way of Seward Park, Columbia City Link station, the Veterans Administration Medical Center and SODO.
  • Metro is considering two routing options for Route 50—via either Edgar Martinez Way or S Lander Street. Route 50 would operate by way of the West Seattle Bridge except for two or three peak-period trips that would serve Harbor Island.
  • Improve peak frequency to every 15 minutes in the peak direction (to Seattle in the morning and from Seattle in the afternoon).
  • Route 50 would operate every 15 minutes during peak periods and every 30 minutes at other times. Route 50 would operate until 11 p.m. seven days a week.

Advantages

Route 34 Express

  • Would maintain an express bus connection from the Seward Park neighborhood to Rainier Avenue S, the I-90 Freeway Station, and downtown Seattle.

New Route 50

  • Would provide more frequent east-west peak service in the Seward Park neighborhood and Columbia City.
  • Would provide later evening service—until 11 p.m.—seven days a week in the Seward Park neighborhood and Columbia City.
  • Would connect the Columbia City and Seward Park neighborhoods to the Othello and Columbia City Link stations.
  • Would provide a new connection between the Seward Park neighborhood and Columbia City Link station, Beacon Hill, SODO, Harbor Island, and Alaska Junction in West Seattle.
  • Would provide a new connection between Delridge Way SW and Alaska Junction in West Seattle, as well as a connection to Route 125 on Delridge Way for service to South Seattle Community College.
  • Would improve service in the SODO area.

Disadvantages

Route 34 Express

  • By maintaining service on Route 34, less new service would be provided on other routes in southeast Seattle.

Route 35

  • Current Route 35 riders would have to ride Route 50 and transfer between bus and light rail at the SODO Link station for travel to and from Harbor Island.

Route 39

  • Current Route 39 riders between the Seward Park neighborhood, Columbia City, or Beacon Hill and downtown Seattle would have to transfer. The estimated travel time between Seward Park and downtown Seattle using Route 50 with a transfer at Othello or Columbia City Link stations would be 5 to 15 minutes faster than current service.
  • No off-peak service would be provided on Seward Park Avenue S between S Othello Street and S Henderson Street.
