Beacon Hill Georgetown

Affected Routes: 32, 36, 60, 106

Table of Contents

Purpose

  • Provide service connecting Beacon Hill, New Holly, and Othello Link station.
  • Maintain service connecting south Beacon Hill to downtown Seattle.

Proposed changes

Route 32

  • Discontinue this route and replace it with revised Route 106 south of S Othello Street and with revised routes 36 and 50 north of S Othello Street.

Route 36

  • Extend all trips to the Othello Link station using new trolley wire that will be installed on S Myrtle Street and S Othello Street between Beacon Avenue S and Martin Luther King Jr. Way S.
  • Replace Route 36 with Route 106 south of S Othello Street.

Route 60

  • Improve bus service to every 20 minutes during peak periods.
  • Extend all weekend trips from Georgetown to White Center in 2010. This improvement will be made possible by a financial partnership between Metro and the City of Seattle.

Route 106

  • Revise to serve Rainier Beach Link station and south Beacon Hill, replacing portions of current routes 32 and 36. Routes 7, 9, 36 and 50 would provide service on portions of Rainier Avenue S and S Othello Street where Route 106 would no longer provide service.
  • Revise to serve Georgetown and Airport Way S instead of using I-5.
  • Improve peak frequency to every 15 minutes in the peak direction (to Seattle in the morning and from Seattle in the afternoon)..
  • Add late-night service departing downtown Seattle at 1:15 a.m. and 2:15 a.m.

Advantages

Route 36

  • Would provide more frequent service between Othello Station, New Holly, and Beacon Hill.
  • Reliability would be improved because all trips would use the same routing between downtown Seattle and the Othello Link station.

Route 60

  • More frequent peak-period service would help relieve overcrowding.
  • Would provide new weekend service between Georgetown and White Center.

Route 106

  • Route 106 would be faster and more frequent than Route 32 for customers south of S Othello Street.
  • Would provide more frequent service between downtown Seattle and employment areas along Airport Way S in Georgetown.
  • Would directly connect Georgetown with south Beacon Hill, Rainier Beach, and Renton.
  • Would provide more frequent peak-period service.
  • Would make transfers possible in Georgetown between Route 60 and Route 106.

Disadvantages

Routes 32 and 36

  • Some riders along Beacon Avenue S would have to transfer to travel between north Beacon Hill and south Beacon Hill.

Route 106

  • Travel time between downtown Seattle, Skyway and Renton would increase by about five minutes. (Riders could transfer to or from Link light rail at Rainier Beach for a faster trip.)
