How to Get a Metro Vanpool on the Road
To join an existing vanpool or to find other people interested in forming a vanpool, use RideshareOnline.com, Metro's self-serve online ridematching service. Or, send a completed Ridematch Application to Metro. See our VanPool Riders Wanted Bulletin (menu on left) for available openings.
About Metro VanPools
- You need four other people, in addition to yourself -- or as many as 14 -- to organize a vanpool. The more people, the lower your fare.
- Once your pool is together, you need to decide on a route, pick-up points and schedule.
- Choose a primary driver and at least one back-up.
- Primary drivers, who meet Metro requirements [.PDF 88kb], ride free and may receive 40 free personal miles each month. Additional miles are available to drivers for a low mileage fee.
- You'll also need a bookkeeper to collect fares.
- Just complete the Metro Commuter Van Program Application & Agreement with Terms & Conditions: [.PDF 440kb] [revised 8/6/08 - this single form replaces the Metro VanPool Driver Application, Metro VanPool Bookkeeper Application and Metro VanPool Participant Agreement with Terms & Conditions] or call 206-625-4500. Once your pool is approved, drivers and bookkeepers take an online orientation course. And then, the driver will be scheduled to pickup the van.
- As a rider, you pay a low monthly fare that's far below what you'd pay for gas, oil, insurance and parking -- plus you save wear and tear on your car. And it's worth asking if your employer is one of many who offer transportation subsidies.
- Vanpools can use diamond lanes to cruise through traffic. You'll also be first in line for ferry crossings, and you may be eligible for preferred parking at work.
