Loading your bike on Metro buses video

(Intro music)

Narrator says:

Loading your bike onto a new three-position bus bike rack is similar to using the older, two-bike model.

Before the bus arrives, get your bike ready to load by removing panniers and any other accessories that could potentially fall off the bike.

When the bus arrives, be sure to alert the driver that you are planning to load your bike before stepping in front of the bus.

Make sure the driver acknowledges your desire to load.

Squeeze the rack handle upwards to release the stowed bike rack.

Lift your bike onto the tray. Each rack is labeled for front wheel placement.

Please load your bike in the outside slot first - if vacant.

While holding the bike upright, push the black knob in with the palm of your hand to extend the support arm and raise it over the top of the front wheel.

Pull the grip straight and steady to extend the arm.

Make sure you pull it all the way out.

Do not twist or pull side-to-side as this may result in binding.

Pull to fully extend the arm, then rotate the arm to place the hook over the tire as close as possible to the head tube of the bike.

The support arm needs to be as close as possible to the bicycle’s head tube.

A decal on the bus indicates the area of the wheel where the support arm needs to be placed to secure the bike on the rack as effectively as possible.

If there is already a bike in the outside slot of a three-position rack, there is a special way to load the middle slot so that you do not need to step out into traffic:

  • First: Walk out with your bike on your right side.
  • Stand at the centerline of the bus.
  • Turn the bike at a 90-degree angle to the rack, the rear wheel closest to the bus.
  • Lift the rear wheel into the rack and rotate counter-clockwise.

The third bike can be loaded from the curb.

To unload your bike:

  • Alert the driver that you are about to unload your bike.
  • Raise the support arm off the tire.
  • Move the support arm down and out of your way.
  • Lift your bike out of the rack.

If there is no other bike in the rack, return the bike rack to the stowed position.

Reach underneath the rack to grab the handle.

Squeeze the handle and raise the rack and push towards the front of the bus until it latches.

Thank you for riding King County Metro Transit. And happy cycling.
